FLW's Swansea City fan pundit does not believe winger Ronald is good enough for the Premier League amid reports linking him with Coventry City.

Swansea City will be hoping for an improved campaign in the Championship this season after another mid-table finish.

Swansea began last season under the guidance of Alan Sheehan, but he was sacked in November with the club sitting 18th in the table, and Vitor Matos left his role at Portuguese side Maritimo to succeed the Irishman in South Wales.

While some inconsistency remained under Matos, the 38-year-old oversaw gradual progress in the second half of the season, and the Swans eventually finished the campaign in a respectable 11th place.

It has been a busy start to the summer for Swansea, with four new signings arriving so far in Stephen Welsh, Moussa Yeo, Joseph Opoku and Elijah Just, but they have also lost star midfielder Ethan Galbraith, who made a surprise move to Championship rivals Stoke City for a reported fee of £10 million.

With Liam Cullen also on the verge of an exit as he closes in on a switch to Leicester City, it seems another of the Swans' key men is attracting interest from elsewhere, with newly-promoted Premier League side Coventry City said to be keen on winger Ronald, along with Corinthians in his native Brazil and clubs from Saudi Arabia.

Ronald joined Swansea from Brazilian side Anapolis in January 2024, and he has scored 11 goals and provided 12 assists in 116 appearances for the club so far, including netting five goals and registering five assists in 49 games in all competitions last season.

When asked for his thoughts on the reports linking Ronald with Coventry, FLW's Swansea City fan pundit Will Hughes insisted that the winger will not be making the move to the Premier League this summer, having failed to build on the early potential he showed during his time with the Swans.

"Firstly, there's no way Ronald is going to the Premier League," Will told FLW.

"I will eat my hat if he ends up in the Premier League.

"I think there are a few players in our squad who are good enough for the Championship, but they won't make the cut in the Premier League, and, unfortunately, he's one of them.

"I will always credit his work ethic and his drive, off the ball he is absolutely fantastic with the energy that he brings, he chases everything and is perfect for a high press.

"However, certainly last season, he's taken a bit of a nose dive in terms of his quality.

"I remember when he first came, he brought a bit of flair, a bit of drive, got us up the pitch in games and scored a couple of goals.

"However, since the start of last season he's been pretty poor.

"I think he's lost a yard of pace, his confidence is on the floor, he doesn't look like he wants to take on his man anymore, he's not able to deliver a cross.

"I don't want to be too critical of him because I think he does have that drive and energy off the ball, which is really good to watch.

"It's just a shame that isn't replicated on the ball because, if it was, he could potentially play in the Premier League, but his end product is his biggest let down.

"I think he has all the hallmarks of playing as a wing-back, he could be a very good wing-back, so that could be potentially why Coventry are looking at him.

"I would be amazed if he ended up in the Premier League.

"I think, if he is to go anywhere, it would probably be Brazil, back to Portugal or Saudi Arabia, somewhere like that, unless we hold on to him until the end of August and a Championship club is desperate for a winger and pull him through the door."

Ronald made a big initial impact after his arrival at Swansea two-and-a-half years ago, but he has failed to deliver consistently in recent times, and his lack of end product has caused plenty of frustration among the fanbase.

It would be a surprise to see Coventry make a formal bid for Ronald this summer, but if the Swans were to receive a suitable offer from the Sky Blues — or any other club — they should consider selling the Brazilian while his stock remains relatively high.

Swansea have signed two wingers this summer in Yeo and Opoku, with the latter joining for a reported fee of £6 million, so it remains to be seen whether Ronald will even be a regular starter in the upcoming campaign, and it may be best for all parties for his time at the Swansea.com Stadium to come to an end.
