Coventry City have suffered a major setback, with Frank Lampard confirming Haji Wright will miss the start of the Premier League season after a serious quad injury. The striker will sit out Friday night’s opener at Arsenal.
According to Goal.com, Lampard said the 28-year-old faces a number of weeks out and could be sidelined for up to 12 weeks, delaying his top-flight debut.
Wright hit 17 goals last season as Coventry won the Championship title and promotion. He also sat out the final two pre-season friendlies against Espanyol and Monaco. The club now approach their first top-flight fixture in 25 years without their leading scorer.
Coventry have moved to reinforce their attack, signing Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest for a reported nine million pounds and Sidiki Cherif from Fenerbahce. Awoniyi brings four seasons of Premier League experience and scored 21 league goals for Forest.
His arrival increases competition for places with Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante. The club have also broken their transfer record four times this window, including a £23.1m deal for midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi to meet the demands ahead.
