Nice, 13th, have sunk in recent weeks after nine straight defeats and off-field incidents, and could seek a reset in the transfer window despite severe financial limits.
According to L'Équipe, there is no budget even to contemplate parting with the head coach, who is on that nine-game losing run and has already offered to be the shock to jolt the team.
Several departures are possible. Jeremie Boga is understood not to want to play for Nice any longer and is looking for an exit, with recent talk of interest from Fiorentina, bottom of Serie A. A move for Terem Moffi is also on the table, yet his wages and recent form are clear obstacles after his return a few months ago from a cruciate ligament rupture. A short-term loan could be the only workable route.
Summer signing Kevin Carlos has struggled badly, so adding a centre-forward looks necessary. The only current alternative is Bernard Nguene, 19, who has played 136 minutes in Ligue 1.
Another priority, again likely via a loan, is a central defender. Melvin Bard has been filling in when not at left-back, while captain Dante is battling knee problems, has featured only once since 18 October, and there is no guarantee of a lasting return. Antoine Mendy is also absent at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal.
The situation of Jonathan Clauss bears watching too, as his summer desire to leave has not disappeared.
