Cristian Romero has been heavily linked with a move away from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The 28-year-old is looking to join a bigger club where he can fight for major trophies. Arsenal have been mentioned as a potential destination, and Tottenham insider Paul O Keefe has now confirmed that the Tottenham defender is indeed very interested in joining Arsenal.

The animosity between the two clubs will make any deal difficult to complete. However, Romero has an existing relationship with the Arsenal assistant manager, Gabriel Heinze, and therefore he is prepared to join the north London rivals.

There is no doubt that the 28-year-old is one of the finest defenders in the league. His departure would be a massive loss for Tottenham, but losing him to a direct rival would be catastrophic. It would send out the wrong statement regarding the club’s ambitions. Tottenham would prefer to sell him abroad if the player is indeed leaving this summer.

Meanwhile, Arsenal already have a world-class defensive unit. However, William Saliba is sidelined with an injury. They could use more depth and quality in the defensive unit. The 28-year-old World Cup winner would be an excellent acquisition. Apart from his qualities as a defender, he is a leader, and he could help Arsenal improve on and off the pitch.

Arsenal managed to win the Premier League title last season, and they will look to win the UEFA Champions League as well. They could use more leaders and experienced players in the team.

Romero has already won the World Cup and Copa America with his country, and he will look to win major trophies at the club level now.
