Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero is reportedly open to a sensational and highly controversial transfer to Arsenal, according to Gunners insider HandofArsenal.

The reigning Premier League champions have registered an interest in the 28-year-old, having been forced into the market for defensive reinforcements following William Saliba’s severe back injury while on international duty with France at the World Cup.

Direct transfers between Arsenal and Spurs have been rare in modern history. Still, when the Gunners made initial contact with Romero’s representatives, they indicated he would be open to a move across North London.

Romero has made little secret of his desire for a new challenge away from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer as Spurs rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi.

Having established himself among the Premier League’s top defenders, the opportunity to join Mikel Arteta’s side as they attempt to defend their domestic crown is an attractive prospect.

However, any prospect of a historic deal has been swiftly dismissed by the Tottenham hierarchy. Spurs consider selling their ‘phenomenal’ club captain to Arsenal a non-starter, maintaining a strict policy against doing business with their fiercest rivals.

Direct moves between the two clubs are virtually unheard of in modern football; Sol Campbell’s free transfer in 2001 and William Gallas’ move in 2010 are rare exceptions that underscore the friction such deals create.

With Tottenham refusing to sanction a domestic transfer to Arsenal, Romero’s exit now looks set to be overseas.

Atletico Madrid have made significant progress after agreeing personal terms on a long-term contract until 2030, while Inter Milan have reached a €40 million agreement in principle.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have turned their attention to alternative targets, including Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa.

Although Romero remains interested in the project at the Emirates Stadium, Tottenham’s firm refusal to negotiate ensures his future will lie outside the Premier League.
