According to Superdeporte, Cristiano Ronaldo has rejoined Al-Nassr training after a stand-off with the Saudi Public Investment Fund over recent decisions he feels do not favour his team.

The Portuguese had declared himself in rebellion and his whereabouts were unclear, to the point he sat out Al-Nassr’s last Saudi Pro League match.

On social media, “Se busca” posters circulated and there was speculation he might leave Saudi Arabia by paying a 50 million clause.

He believes Al Hilal are receiving more media attention, which he views as unfair. The arrival of Karim Benzema at that club was cited as the trigger for his stance.

His return appears linked to public backing from the club and head coach Jorge Jesús, who supported his position and sided with him in his dispute with the Saudi PIF.

The PIF plays a central role in the Saudi Pro League as Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, aiming to diversify the economy by investing in key sectors, including sport.

In 2023 it took majority stakes in Al-Nassr, Al Hilal, Al-Ahli and Al-Ittihad, enabling marquee signings, infrastructure upgrades and the ability to attract international talent such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kanté and Riyad Mahrez.

The PIF also controls Newcastle United in the Premier League, and transfers between Saudi clubs and the English side may show discrepancies in the final fee. The strategy, led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, uses sport to drive the economy and project a modern image internationally.
