Cristiano Ronaldo has condemned taunts aimed at Rúben Neves and called for firm action after Al-Taawoun fans targeted the Al-Hilal midfielder. He later urged that those responsible face lifetime stadium bans.

According to Goal.com, the chants came during a stoppage in a match Al-Hilal won 0-6. Home supporters repeatedly shouted the name of the late Diogo Jota at Neves, who responded with sarcastic applause.

Jota died in early July 2025, aged 28, in a single-vehicle road accident in Spain. His younger brother André Silva, 25, also died in the crash. Jota was under contract with Liverpool.

Neves was close to Jota, the pair played together at Wolverhampton Wanderers and for Portugal. After Jota’s death, Neves had a tattoo of the two of them inked on his calf.

After the match, Neves said, “I only hope that after what they have done, they do not go and pray.” During the game he also appeared to gesture that the behaviour was being watched by higher powers.

Ronaldo, a Portugal team-mate of Neves and the 41-year-old Al-Nassr forward, believes the Saudi Pro League must act. “The league must act and punish this kind of behaviour from supporters,” he wrote on Instagram.

“This is no longer football and boundaries must be set,” Ronaldo added. “People who behave like this should never be allowed into a stadium again.”
