A planned profile of Dolores Aveiro in Madrid in May 2018 quickly became fraught, as focus on Cristiano Ronaldo saw the interview briefly halted and later a warning over any mention of Lionel Messi.
According to L'Équipe, the meeting was arranged via publisher Michel Lafon ahead of the French release of Aveiro’s autobiography, with the magazine preparing a cover feature.
The team visited her villa in Pozuelo de Alarcón, an affluent, tightly secured suburb west of Madrid, next to Cristiano’s home, in what was her first time hosting a journalist there.
Inside the modern, spacious house, they sat on a large grey U-shaped sofa, surrounded by her two daughters, her son, the manager, a photographer, the editor, a friend acting as Portuguese translator, and Lucas, the Persian cat.
With a notebook of questions using her view of her son as the spine, the chat ran about 20 minutes before the manager abruptly stopped proceedings, saying there were far too many questions about Cristiano and that was not the purpose.
The interview resumed after a swift pivot back to Aveiro and her story, drawing on the book.
Later, as conversation drifted again towards Cristiano, the subject of arch-rival Lionel Messi surfaced, prompting a stern look from one sister and a clear instruction that his name was not to be uttered.
The remainder played out on edge, but the session did reach its conclusion.
