Portugal’s Under-16s opened their Algarve International Tournament campaign with a 3-0 win over Japan, with Cristiano Ronaldo Jr playing a prominent role after coming off the bench.

The match began in low-key fashion, but Portugal took the lead through Simão Lopes after good work down the right from Diego Farinha. The real spotlight, though, arrived in the 26th minute when Ronaldo Jr was introduced following an injury to Rafael Cabral.

The forward looked lively from the outset. He almost marked his arrival with a goal, forcing a sharp save from the Japanese goalkeeper, and was heavily involved in Portugal’s attacking play for the remainder of the half. After José Garrafa saw an effort blocked, Ronaldo Jr reacted quickly to the rebound, only to be denied again.

After the break, he went close once more, this time set up by Farinha. His shot was parried into the path of Garrafa, who tapped in to double the lead.

Although he didn’t get on the scoresheet, Ronaldo Jr was a constant threat throughout his cameo as Portugal ran out comfortable winners.
