The rift between Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal’s national set-up has moved into politics, with parliament understood to have pressed the federation to repair relations between Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus.

On Wednesday evening the dispute came to a head, Ronaldo left the camp on a private jet after a row with Jesus, saying the truth would emerge.

Soon after, O Jogo claimed it signalled the end of his international career. On Saturday, Marca reported the federation are pushing for a reconciliation between Jesus and Ronaldo.

The federation are now said to have been told to reunite the pair, with a meeting expected next week.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro is said to have already contacted those involved. A definitive split could have sporting consequences and, reports in Portugal suggest, damage the international image of the team and the federation.

For more than 20 years Ronaldo has been one of Portugal’s most prominent sporting figures, and he could play a commercial and promotional role around the 2030 World Cup in Portugal, Spain and Morocco.
