The standoff between Cristiano Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus has escalated, casting fresh doubt over the Portugal captain’s international future.
Marca states that Jesus named Ronaldo for four matches, and the pair agreed he would play the opener against Wales and the fourth against Norway on 4 October.
Ronaldo started against Wales, played 66 minutes and had a goal ruled out. On the morning of the Norway game, Jesus told him he might use him for the final 30 minutes.
After Erling Haaland made it 1-1 in the 51st minute, Ronaldo began to warm up. Portugal went 2-1 ahead in the 54th minute, and he was not sent on despite warming up for around half an hour. He left the pitch angrily at full time.
The following day he skipped group training, instead working alone in the hotel gym. At his press conference, Jesus downplayed the incident as a brief spell of frustration lasting roughly 10 to 20 seconds. Ronaldo was unconvinced, chose to leave the camp, and is set to fly by private jet to Madrid on Wednesday evening.
It is too early to say whether he has played his last match for Portugal, and he has made no official statement. His walkout raises the possibility of a farewell. Ronaldo has 146 goals in 234 caps, the nation’s record scorer and appearance maker.
