Cristiano Ronaldo has come in for criticism over the way he handled Portugal’s opening goal against Uruguay.
It looked to everyone that the former Manchester United striker had given Portugal the lead at the Lusail Iconic Stadium when he wheeled away celebrating having seemingly flicked on a Bruno Fernandes cross.
However, the goal was in fact awarded to Fernandes with Adidas even going so far as to reveal that the sensor within the match ball confirmed that Ronaldo hadn’t actually made contact.
And it was the frustrated reaction of Ronaldo to the goal not going under his name which has rubbed a few football fans up the wrong way.
Their argument being, of course, that football is a team sport and it should be irrelevant to Ronaldo whether it was him or Fernandes who was credited with the goal because either way, it was a goal for Portugal.
But the point to the contrary would be that if Ronaldo was certain that he made contact with the ball, why would that not be acknowledged in the awarding of the goal?
It’s a debate where you can very easily and very quickly go round and round in circles all day long, but one supporter has taken a rather different approach to their analysis of the Ronaldo drama.
That’s because Twitter user @NoloFCB – who, it must be said, has Lionel Messi as their profile picture – has gone viral for posting a video that they claim shows Ronaldo has history when it comes to wanting to be the goalscorer himself.
Sharing a clip from Real Madrid‘s 5-1 La Liga win at Osasuna in April 2012, the supporter rather provocatively penned in their caption: “Ronaldo trying to steal his teammates a goal isn’t something new. He has already tried it before.”
And what was it about said clip that proved Ronaldo likes to ‘steal’ goals? Well, to be fair to the tweeter, it’s a rather uncomplimentary instance of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner essentially thwarting what looked like an almost certain goal for Gonzalo Higuain.
With Higuain having rounded the goalkeeper, Ronaldo inexplicably races right up to his teammate to the point where he pretty much tackles him and snuffs out the opportunity to score.
It really is one of those moments that has to be seen to be believed, so be sure to check out the head-scratching incident where Ronaldo essentially turned into a defender for the opposition down below:
Can anybody explain what on earth was going on there?
With each replay making Ronaldo’s movements look even more confounding, it really is difficult to get your head around why he would risk messing up what surely would have been a goal for his strike partner. How bizarre.
The Real icon also finds himself in the news with regards to speculation surrounding his future having recently brought an end to his second United spell on the back of an explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
Ronaldo has since been linked to a stunning move to Saudi Arabia’s Al Nasr amidst yet more speculation that a move to a top Champions League club seems unlikely.
Fabrizio Romano explained on Wednesday that Al Nasr have indeed made a head-spinning offer of almost €200 million per season, but that nothing is signed or decided yet with Ronaldo fully focused on the World Cup and matters of sponsorship still to be discussed.
