In the 73rd minute, substitute Matt Crooks swept a right-footed finish into the bottom right corner to settle the game.

Ivor Pandur produced five saves as Hull held firm under pressure. Portsmouth registered 21 attempts and 66.4% possession. Hull recorded two attempts, both on target.

The visitors' bench made the difference after the hour mark, with Crooks introduced before striking the winner.

Adrian Segecic delivered a stream of crosses as Portsmouth pushed late, and substitute Madiodio Dia headed wide twice in second half stoppage time.
