Crysencio Summerville’s first Netherlands World Cup call-up prompted talk of a Leeds United windfall from his 2024 move to West Ham. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Leeds are not due any extra payment if he makes his senior debut.
Summerville wanted to remain at Elland Road after the 2023 relegation, expecting game time and a chance to prove himself. The winger excelled for Daniel Farke’s side in the Championship, scoring 19 goals and adding nine assists to win Championship Player of the Season, though his form dipped late and Leeds lost the play-off final at Wembley.
On August 3 West Ham triggered a release clause in his deal, Leeds banking just over £25m plus add-ons. His first Hammers season ended early due to a serious hamstring injury that cost him 18 Premier League games.
This season he did not score until January, netting in a 2-1 win over Spurs, the first of four in consecutive Premier League games. He finished with seven goals in all competitions and five assists. Speculation over a move began before West Ham’s relegation was confirmed despite a final-day win over Leeds, and a return to the Championship appears unlikely, at best.
The 24-year-old will link up with Ronald Koeman’s squad for friendlies against Algeria and Uzbekistan, then group games against Japan, Sweden and Tunisia. The group stage could pit him against current Leeds United stars Gabriel Gudmundsson, selected by Sweden despite an injury-curtailed club season, and Ao Tanaka with Japan.
