Crystal Palace host their first Premier League fixture of the season on Friday, looking to respond after a 2-0 opening-weekend defeat at Everton under new head coach Pierre Sage.
City’s recent record in this fixture is formidable, and Palace’s task is complicated further by a summer dominated by uncertainty over two of their key attacking players.
Ismaila Sarr continues his individual training programme and will again be unavailable with a groin injury. Chadi Riad remains sidelined after being stretchered off against Everton, with the club fearing a longer-term knee problem. Sage has addressed ongoing speculation over Jean-Philippe Mateta’s contract situation directly: “I speak with him every day, and, in front of me, I have a guy, funny, happy to be here. He gives his best in every session.”
Mateta is expected to continue leading the line, having started at Everton despite the uncertainty surrounding his future. With Riad out, Jaydee Canvot, Chris Richards and Takehiro Tomiyasu look the likely trio in defence. Dwight McNeil and Eddie Nketiah are set to operate behind Mateta in Sarr’s continued absence, while Daniel Munoz, also subject to transfer speculation this summer, is expected to retain his place at wing-back.
Crystal Palace possible starting XI (3-4-2-1): Henderson; Canvot, Richards, Tomiyasu; Munoz, Wharton, Kamada, Mitchell; McNeil, Nketiah; Mateta
The Premier League match kicks off at 20:00 on Friday, 28 August 2026.
The match will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League in the UK.
