Crystal Palace are determined to sign Lyon centre-back Ruben Kluivert before the winter transfer window closes tonight, according to French outlet Foot Mercato.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner is open to strengthening in the position after Marc Guehi left the Selhurst Park club earlier in the window.
The Eagles have now opened talks with Lyon to sign Kluivert, and the Dutchman could be on his way to England if an agreement can be struck.
The 24-year-old joined the Ligue 1 club from Casa Pia last summer, signing a deal until 2030, but he could be on his way out already.
He has played 17 games across all competitions, largely due to the vacancy left by Moussa Niakhate’s participation at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Kluivert remains behind the Senegalese in the pecking order and a move to Palace could appeal to him if he is guaranteed regular playing chances.
The Eagles want Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordonez, but his valuation has put them off and a move for the Lyon defender appears more realistic.
He has a market value of around €2.5 million after joining the French club for €3.78m, and a similar figure could be enough for Palace to get him.
The London club have received a boost after Moroccan defender Chadi Riad made his first start in 13 months against Nottingham Forest yesterday.
However, they could do with more options in the position and adding Kluivert to the team could come in handy going forward.
Palace have a few hours left in the window in their attempt to get a deal for the Dutchman over the line, and more names could be linked with them in the coming hours.
