Crystal Palace are making a dramatic late attempt to hijack Sunderland’s deal for Olympique Lyonnais winger Malick Fofana before the transfer deadline, according to Santi Aouna.

Despite Sunderland reaching a full agreement with Lyon for the 21-year-old, Crystal Palace have made a last-ditch intervention to secure his signature.

Sunderland appeared set to win the race after agreeing a deal worth over €30 million plus add-ons, granting Fofana permission to travel for a medical and finalise a five-year contract.

However, Palace officials have entered talks to submit a counter-offer, with manager Pierre Sage holding talks with the Belgian international.

The Eagles’ late involvement adds significant uncertainty to what seemed a settled transfer.

Losing Fofana at this stage would be a major setback for Sunderland so late in the window as they prepare for a demanding European campaign.

Sunderland officials are working to finalise the move before Palace can sway the player towards Selhurst Park.

Lyon remain open to selling Fofana to the highest bidder to ease their financial strain after missing out on Champions League football following their defeat to Fenerbahce in the play-offs.

Since joining from KAA Gent in January 2024, Fofana’s explosive pace, dribbling, and improving end product have made him one of Europe’s most sought-after young wingers.

With the transfer window in its final hours, talks between intermediaries, Lyon, and both Premier League clubs are expected to produce a swift resolution.

Arsenal were also interested in Fofana but withdrew because of Lyon’s asking price, despite having the player’s green light.

Meanwhile, Lyon are closing in on a deal to sign Keito Nakamura as a replacement for Fofana.
