The Technical Committee of Referees said in its weekly Tiempo Revisión programme that VAR acted incorrectly in Vallecas, committing two errors. It confirmed the system should not have intervened in minute 68 to rule out a Rayo goal and award Real Sociedad a penalty, a call that has fuelled controversy over the technology.

A mistake in minute three was also acknowledged, when neither the referee nor VAR penalised Turrientes for holding Carlos Martín and preventing him from finishing. The incident was classified as persistent holding and a clear and obvious error that required VAR intervention.

On the minute 68 flashpoint, Ratiu’s contact on Pablo Marín was described as light, below the threshold for a clear and obvious error. The on-field decision should have been respected and VAR should not have stepped in.

In Mallorca versus Valencia at Son Moix, a late appeal for a penalty after Maffeo caught Gayà in added time was deemed not punishable. There was deemed to be a partial stamp with the front of the boot after the cross, and such post-cross contacts must be clearly reckless to be fouls. Given the interpretable intensity, the referee’s call stood and VAR was right not to intervene.

For Betis against Real Madrid, Bellerín’s equaliser was ruled correctly awarded. A potential earlier foul by Antony on Mendy was dismissed, with the contact considered light and without a clear cause-and-effect grip. The referee’s interpretation was upheld and, as a subjective action, VAR appropriately stayed out under established protocols.
