According to Diario Do Peixe, Cuca confirmed after the draw with San Lorenzo that Neymar has a minor oedema in his right calf, and that a return against Deportivo Cuenca next Tuesday has not been ruled out.
Without Neymar, Santos drew 2-2 at Vila Belmiro, moved to four points and remain bottom of Group D. They can no longer top the group, but second place would still take them into the play-offs.
Cuca said it is difficult to make firm statements and that matters around Neymar require care. He prefers to assess the situation internally, and believes that, if they decide to use him, he will be in condition because the problem is minor.
Neymar has been called up by Carlo Ancelotti and is due to report on 27 May at Granja Comary in Teresópolis. The Santos v Deportivo Cuenca match is scheduled for the previous day.
Brazil’s plan includes a friendly against Panama on 31 May at the Maracanã, travel to the United States on one June, then Egypt on six June in Cleveland before their World Cup opener. Even with the national team date approaching, Santos’ predicament may weigh on the final call, as they must beat Deportivo Cuenca and rely on other results to stay alive.
