Curacao head into their second match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 against Ecuador on Sunday, looking to recover after a tough loss in their opening game.
Curaçao, playing in their first-ever World Cup, had mixed results in their preparation matches. They secured an emphatic 4-0 win over Aruba but also suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat against Scotland.
Their tournament debut proved extremely challenging, as they were heavily beaten 7-1 by a dominant German side in their opening game.
Curaçao have no injury problems heading into this match. Following the heavy loss to Germany, experienced coach Dick Advocaat allowed his players an additional day of rest to help them recover physically.
Curaçao will depend on their more experienced players as they attempt to cause an upset against their South American opponents.
Midfielder Livano Comenencia is expected to keep his place in the starting lineup after scoring the nation’s first-ever World Cup goal.
Attacking creativity will largely come from Tahith Chong and Juninho Bacuna, who will be tasked with breaking down Ecuador’s defense.
In attack, Jurgen Locadia is likely to lead the line alongside Sontje Hansen. The team will aim to use their pace on the counter-attack while staying compact defensively to handle Ecuador’s pressure.
Possible Curacao starting XI: Room; Floranus, Bazoer, Obispo, Fonville; Comenencia, L. Bacuna, J. Bacuna; Chong; Locadia, Hansen
The match will kick off at 1am BST on Sunday, 21st June.
For viewers in the United Kingdom, the FIFA World Cup Group E match between Ecuador vs. Curaçao will be broadcast live on BBC One.
