Cyle Larin heads to the World Cup aiming to turn Southampton heartbreak into a lift with Canada after a prolific loan on the South Coast.
According to Sainstmarching.com, the 31-year-old remains on the Saints' books on loan at St Mary's for now. After the tournament he is set to return to parent club Mallorca, with his hot streak counting for little as Spygate scuppered promotion hopes and any permanent move.
Larin had long wanted to test himself in England, having previously played in Türkiye, Spain and the United States. He settled quickly, scoring eight in 16 Championship outings and forcing Southampton into the playoff picture before events off the pitch overtook the campaign.
The Ontario-born forward needed that surge after only one goal at Feyenoord. He will look to channel frustration into the World Cup, with Canada boss Jesse Marsch, formerly of Leeds United, praising his form in the build-up.
"I know he feels robbed by the situation that’s happened in Southampton."
"There’s been a lot of banter around this week about who should be in the Premier League … but Cyle’s form is exactly what we wanted. Going to Southampton, having to fight for minutes, having to play the way that he did in that kind of league, showing his quality, scoring goals, building confidence.”
Marsch will lead Group B games against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland, and hopes Larin can strike in the opener after Canada failed to win in Qatar in 2022. Beyond the World Cup, his longer-term club future remains to be decided.
