Sunderland goalkeeper Dan Cameron has been backed to climb the leagues after an eye-catching spell with Hebburn Town. The 20-year-old has impressed for the Northern Premier League neighbours.
According to Sunderland Echo, Cameron first sampled senior football on loan at Hebburn in the second half of last season. He rejoined earlier this term on a one-month deal, since extended to the end of the campaign.
He has kept eight clean sheets in his second spell under manager Daniel Moore. Hebburn are in contention for a first ever promotion to National League North, with Stockton Town, Hednesford Town and FC United of Manchester among their rivals.
Before Saturday’s visit to Warrington Rylands, Moore praised Cameron’s attitude, noting he wanted to return, embrace the club and test himself beyond academy matches. The manager argued some academy players look down on non-league, whereas Cameron is laying firm foundations for his career.
Cameron’s Sunderland contract expires this summer, so a decision on his future will be taken in the coming weeks and months. Moore believes he could play at a high level, suggesting EFL clubs will value his background, attitude and willingness to step into non-league. He added that a touch of luck will help, next season should be another stepping stone, and he hopes the path leads to league football, which would reflect well on Hebburn’s role.
