Granit Xhaka has sent an emotional message to Sunderland fans as he returns to training this week for 2026/27 after a three-week break following Switzerland's historic World Cup. He will rejoin Thomas Meunier, Omar Alderete and Chemsdine Talbi on Wearside.
According to Sunderland Echo, Chelsea made a major move to sign him earlier in the summer, but after initially considering it he ended the speculation and committed to continue on Wearside. As he readies to lead the Black Cats into their first European campaign for over 50 years, he urged unity.
"We created memories that will stay with us forever," Xhaka wrote on Instagram.
"Let's cherish every moment, fight for each other, and make this season even more forgettable than the last. Together. Always."
Head coach Régis Le Bris has not spoken to Xhaka since the World Cup to allow him proper rest, but says his return will lift pre-season preparations.
"It's more or less a rule [not to contact players on their holidays]," he said. "We're looking forward to seeing him this week because he sets the standards, and he is so important as a player and as a leader."
