The 24-year-old has weighed up options after limited Premier League minutes this season. Ipswich are acting to bolster Kieran McKenna’s squad for a promotion push and view Neil as a useful addition for the run-in.

The move would reunite Neil with former Sunderland winger Jack Clarke. Ipswich sit just outside the automatic spots after a recent loss to Sheffield United, and hold a game in hand on several rivals.

The proposed loan is expected to run to the end of Neil’s contract, with an extension on Wearside now seen as unlikely. A permanent deal this winter was considered difficult, so a loan has emerged as the practical option. Interest has previously come from Rangers and clubs in the Bundesliga, and his future beyond this season remains open.

Head coach Régis Le Bris had hinted at an exit after leaving Neil out of the squad for the 3-1 defeat to West Ham United. If the move goes through, it could mark the end of his long association with his boyhood club, where he has made over 200 appearances since his 2018 debut and helped lift Sunderland from League One.
