Daniel Farke has explained why Gabriel Gudmundsson kept his place and minutes in Leeds United’s FA Cup win, citing faith in the player and thin depth at left wing-back. According to Leedsunited.news, his display has renewed discussion about his role.

Leeds beat Norwich City 3-0, with Gudmundsson supplying an assist and scoring his first goal for the club. The left footer caught the eye throughout.

Farke said he left him on for a long spell, stressing there is a full week to recover. He added he could have rested him, but with Gudmundsson the only left-footed wing-back it becomes tricky when Leeds expect to dominate and deliver crosses from that side.

The call proved worthwhile, his left foot underpinning both the creation and the finish as he finally ended his Leeds drought.

Leeds will learn their quarter-final opponents after West Ham face Brentford, and fans are daring to dream of a Cup run and a return to Wembley. The last trip there ended in a 1-0 defeat to Southampton in the Championship play-off final.

Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea, Southampton and Liverpool have progressed, as have League One’s bottom club Port Vale after beating Sunderland 1-0. Leeds hope for a home draw, and if they avoid one of the big boys then West Ham or Brentford, Port Vale or a 2023-24 play-off final re-run could have them dreaming of a semi-final.
