Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Daniel Levy has stepped down from his role as executive chairman, ending a reign that stretched back almost a quarter of a century.

Levy first joined the Spurs board in December 2000 when ENIC purchased a stake in the club from Sir Alan Sugar.

Since then, he has overseen dramatic change in north London, from the move into a 62,000-seater stadium to regular appearances in European competitions.

Peter Charrington has been appointed to the new position of non-executive chairman, taking over Levy’s responsibilities as the club looks to move into what it has described as “a new era of leadership.”

Levy called time on his spell at the top just months after Tottenham lifted the Europa League, their second major trophy under his watch after the League Cup win in 2008.

His tenure included the run to the Champions League final in 2019 under Mauricio Pochettino, though Spurs were beaten by Liverpool in Madrid.

Despite those achievements, Levy was often a divisive figure among the fanbase. Supporters staged multiple protests last season, voicing frustration over the wage structure, the churn of managers and a sense that the club lacked ambition compared to their biggest rivals.

In total, 14 permanent head coaches worked under Levy, with Thomas Frank the latest after replacing Ange Postecoglou in June. Postecoglou’s dismissal came just two weeks after delivering the Europa League title.

Announcing his decision, Levy said he was “incredibly proud” of what had been built during his time in charge. “We have built this club into a global heavyweight competing at the highest level,” he said.

“More than that, we have built a community. I was lucky enough to work with some of the greatest people in this sport… I wish to thank all the fans that have supported me over the years. It hasn’t always been an easy journey but significant progress has been made.”

Charrington promised stability after a turbulent summer that also saw chief football officer Scott Munn depart and long-time board member Donna-Maria Cullen step down. “This is a new era of leadership for the club, on and off the pitch,” he said.

“We are now fully focused on stability and empowering our talented people across the club, led by Vinai and his executive team.”

Levy’s exit marks a turning point for Spurs, raising questions about the future direction of the club and its ownership, with previous hints at talks with potential investors still fresh in the memory.
