Daniel Thioune earned his first win at Werder Bremen, Kevin Diks buried a late penalty for Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Mathias Pereira Lage finally got off the mark on a tense matchday 24 afternoon. Get German Football News highlights three takeaways from the afternoon kick-offs.

For Bremen, early misses by Romano Schmid and Jovan Milosevic fed the sense it was not their day. After the break Milosevic struck, then a very late own goal secured victory, with Heidenheim offering little.

It was a significant three points for Thioune’s side. Wolfsburg slipped to 17th and, with a tough trip to Stuttgart on Sunday, the odds are not in their favour.

Gladbach arrived winless in seven league games, their last victory at home to Augsburg in January. They dominated Union Berlin yet could not find a way through, and Diks had an earlier finish ruled offside.

A late VAR check brought a penalty, and the 29-year-old calmly beat Frederick Rønnow. He is now their second-top scorer this season with four, which is a problem, and Eugen Polanski’s side rose to 12th, three points clear of the relegation spot.

At Hoffenheim, Pereira Lage, signed from Brest in the summer, finally scored after 22 games, converting his 33rd Bundesliga shot in added time for a 1-0 St.Pauli win. The result lifts Alexander Blessin’s side to 15th, just above the relegation play-off, and if this can kick-start a run for Lage, that would be a big help for St.Pauli’s survival.
