AS Ostiamare, the childhood club of 2006 World Cup winner Daniele De Rossi, sealed promotion to Serie C on Sunday by guaranteeing first place in Serie D Group F.
The Rome suburb club beat Termoli 1-0, and Ancona, their nearest challengers, drew 0-0 at L'Aquila, confirming top spot and automatic ascent. According to L'Équipe, De Rossi took ownership in January 2025.
In tears, the 41-year-old AS Roma legend congratulated his squad after Genoa, the Serie A team he manages, lost 0-2 to Como.
He said his wife had initially told him from the stands that they had not clinched the title, before he learned in the dressing room that the step up was secured. He called it wonderful for Ostia, said the club fully deserved it, and added he could not wait to rejoin his team-mates.
The rise is historic for Ostia and felt unlikely at the season’s start, with the team finishing eighth in their Serie D group last term.
