Daniele Orsato has confirmed five major refereeing and VAR mistakes so far this season, spanning matches including Juventus-Atalanta, Torino-Milan, Como-Parma and Fiorentina-Frosinone.

According to Football Italia, the latest error came this weekend as Juventus beat Atalanta 2-0, with Orsato saying VAR should have intervened for Pierre Kalulu’s shirt pull on Jonathan Rowe at 1-0 to award a penalty.

He likened it to the Coppa Italia tie where Mateo Pellegrino was hauled back by Antonio Caracciolo during Fiorentina’s win over Pisa, with no VAR alert.

Two mistakes were also identified in Fiorentina against Frosinone in Serie A, a penalty on Ilario Monterisi and a red card for Alex Jimenez.

Milan should have had a penalty in their win at Torino, as Nikola Vlasic’s handball merited a VAR on-field review. Despite Cesc Fabregas protesting in the hall, Orsato reiterated that Como midfielder Maxence Caqueret deserved a red for his challenge on Parma’s Sascha Britschgi.

He also backed the decision not to disallow Milan’s goal against Juventus after Koni De Winter’s challenge on Randal Kolo Muani, and said there was no penalty for Roberto Gagliardini on Konan N’Dri in Cagliari-Lecce.

On other debated moments, including Kevin De Bruyne’s push on Johan Vasquez before Napoli’s goal against Genoa and Torbjorn Heggem’s challenge on Gaetano Oristanio in Bologna-Torino, Orsato said the referee had a clear view. He reiterated that VAR should step in only for clear and obvious errors, or when the referee lacked a clear view.
