Danny Welbeck has completed his switch to Chelsea from Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 35-year-old joins Marco Palestra, Morgan Rogers and Maxence Lacroix at Stamford Bridge, bolstering Xabi Alonso's attacking line.

Following his arrival, Welbeck told the club's in-house media: "When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it's something that fills you with such immense pride. Knowing the history of Chelsea, it's a club that wants to win trophies and is pushing to do that every single season.

"I’m really honoured to come to a club of this stature at what feels like a really exciting time. I know a few of the boys already and I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection.

"I’ve got that fire in my belly and I'm ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud."

The shift in Chelsea's transfer strategy, blending youth with experience after a run of primarily signing younger talents in recent years, is evident following Welbeck's arrival, along with the imminent signing of Jordan Henderson from Brentford.

It may have come as a surprise that Chelsea decided to bring in another number nine, considering the options they already have at their disposal.

Welbeck will join Chelsea’s striker group of Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, and Dastan Satpayev.

However, Chelsea are expected to offload at least two of these strikers this summer, possibly even three.

Welbeck made 37 Premier League appearances for Brighton last season, 26 of which as a starter, but he is unlikely to play as big a role at Chelsea.

Fortunately, the former Manchester United forward is well known for his impact from the bench, having the fourth-most goals (18) as a substitute in Premier League history.

He scored three of them last season from 11 substitute appearances for Brighton.

It also helps that Welbeck has already spent two seasons playing alongside Joao Pedro, who is expected to be Alonso’s first-choice striker, from 2023 to 2025.

When Danny Welbeck could make his first Chelsea appearance

Welbeck is set to join the Chelsea squad out in Hong Kong as they head to Asia for the second part of their overseas pre-season tour.

He will meet his new teammates, some of whom he will be familiar with, before likely being given some minutes by Alonso, with three games to play in Asia against Juventus, AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta'zim.

The Englishman is expected to be introduced at Stamford Bridge on August 15 when they host Real Sociedad in their final game of pre-season.
