The Argentine FA confirmed Darío Herrera will referee the upcoming Superclásico between River and Boca, ending days of debate over the appointment.
The Neuquén-born official was preferred ahead of other candidates assessed within the refereeing ranks, many experienced in high-stakes fixtures.
Herrera, an international referee for several years, has overseen decisive matches at home and abroad, including finals and Conmebol competitions. His prior Superclásicos counted in his favour.
He has taken charge of six Superclásicos, a run marked by parity, controversy and a slight tilt towards Boca.
His first was the 0-0 in 2015 in the Copa Libertadores at La Bombonera, suspended after the pepper spray incident. That same year he oversaw Boca’s 1-0 away win sealed by Nicolás Lodeiro.
In 2016 he refereed another goalless draw. In 2022 he was on duty for two Boca victories, in the Copa de la Liga and the Liga Profesional.
The most recent was in 2023, River winning 1-0 through Miguel Borja in a game that ended in a brawl and seven red cards.
With the appointment settled, attention turns to team selection and the logistics around the season’s most charged domestic fixture.
