Darmstadt sign Marco Richter on a free after Mainz exit | OneFootball

Mainz confirmed that Marco Richter has left the club and joined SV Darmstadt 98 on a free transfer.

While on loan last season, the versatile winger made 32 competitive appearances for Darmstadt, contributing 12 goal involvements.

Born in Friedberg, he progressed through the youth systems at Bayern Munich and Augsburg before breaking into Augsburg’s first team. He went on to play 102 competitive matches there, 97 of them in the Bundesliga.

Between August 2021 and August 2024, Richter made 79 top-flight appearances for Hertha BSC and Mainz.

Darmstadt sporting director Paul Fernie said they stayed in touch after the loan and, once his Mainz contract was terminated earlier this week, moved quickly to bring him back. He called Richter’s qualities undisputed, noted he showed last season he can be a key player, and admitted a permanent deal had initially seemed unlikely, before welcoming him back.
