Derby County should not even consider the recent offer received from Monza for Jacob Zetterstrom

Derby County have made some ambitious moves so far this summer as they look to bridge the gap to the top Championship teams.

The Rams finished eighth in the table in 2025/26, missing out on the play-offs by just four points, and another top eight finish would be enough to qualify in the expanded version of the competition in 2027.

In a bid to maintain their competitive level, the club sanctioned a permanent move for Bobby Clark, who proved a key figure while on loan from RB Salzburg last season.

The midfielder made 42 appearances in the Championship last season, contributing three goals and three assists, and he was in the starting lineup for their opening day clash against Charlton Athletic last weekend.

The Derbyshire outfit have also added Filip Bilbija, Charlie Taylor, Sammie Szmodics and Alex Mowatt, alongside Clark, with further signings likely before the market closes on 1 September.

Notably, the club have also been able to hold onto key players, but the final two weeks of the window could test that.

John Eustace will be keen to bolster his squad without losing anyone, with his sights set on bringing Derby into the mix for a place in the Premier League.

Derby County will need convincing to cash in on Jacob Zetterstrom

One player that could depart Pride Park before the end of the transfer window is Jacob Zetterstrom.

The Swede started the 2-1 loss to the Addicks last weekend, but has since become the subject of an offer from Italian side Monza.

It was reported by Fabrizio Romano that the Serie A club offered €2.5 (£2.1) million, along with a 50 per cent sell-on clause.

But this is a derisory offer, and it’s hard to imagine Derby owner David Clowes agreeing to anything close to this bid.

The goalkeeper is a key part of the first team squad, and a deal worth just £2 million would not reflect that importance.

While a 50 per cent sell-on clause could be quite valuable in the future, the Championship side will want a lot more to be offered as a guaranteed sum right now in order to cash in.

Derby were braced for offers for Zetterstrom earlier in the summer, with Leeds United and Eintracht Frankfurt both linked with a move.

The Whites ultimately sealed a deal for James Trafford, so no bids materialised, but it would’ve been easy to imagine Derby demanding an eight-figure sum for the player.

While the 28-year-old did have fitness issues last season, and he is in the final year of his contract, he is also an internationally recognised goalkeeper who competed at the World Cup last summer.

Zetterstrom is also considered one of the more impressive players in his position in the Championship, and will prove difficult to replace if he leaves Pride Park.

A deal in the region of £10 million wouldn’t have been out of the realm of possibility earlier this summer, and Derby must still stick to this kind of figure amid Monza’s interest.

Zetterstrom has made a total of 73 league appearances for Derby since joining the club in the 2024 summer transfer window.

Last season, the goalkeeper kept seven clean sheets and conceded on 42 occasions from 32 league games.

He made a total of 3.28 saves per 90 at a save percentage of 71.4, playing a key role in their eighth place finish (all stats from Fotmob).

Zetterstrom conceded 42 goals from an expected goals conceded of 47.48, meaning he prevented 5.48 goals.

If he can replicate that level for Derby again in 2026/27, then he will be worth a lot more to the club than £2.1 million.
