David Cubillas relishes new Castellón role, learning fast behind the scenes | OneFootball

David Cubillas has returned to CD Castellón after retiring as a player, taking on a multifaceted role across the academy and club operations. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the former captain and centre forward is embracing a second act focused on development rather than the spotlight.

Based at Gaetà Huguet, he splits sessions between the reserve side led by Juan Casajús and the Juvenil A run by Luis Cubedo. He works on individual development of the strikers in both squads, assists on set pieces, and contributes to internal scouting as the club under Haralabos Voulgaris further professionalises.

He also represents Castellón at institutional events, part of a tailored plan to shape a longer term role for one of the club’s symbols. Cubillas says he is adapting, listening and learning a great deal, and for now does not see himself as a head coach, preferring hands on, individual work with youngsters.

His long experience with Castellón is a resource for prospects, alongside fellow academy coach Carles Salvador. He aims to give context about the club’s past so players value the present, recalling a recent trip to face Valencia’s B team where he once played with the first team and lost, to underline how much has changed.

The medium term aim is clear, the academy must feed the first team. Cubillas points to investment to regain a Segunda RFEF place and stresses adding competitive edge, from competing without shrinking and making tackles to running down the clock at a corner.
