The Owls have been reborn following a takeover by US consortium Arise Capital Partners, led by 73-year-old David Storch, whose background is in the aviation services sector.

And with the dark cloud of Dejphon Chansiri finally passing, Wednesday will be able to focus solely on building a team good enough to challenge for promotion and get back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

That aim will have its challenges though, with the Yorkshire outfit remaining under budget restrictions for the next two seasons as part of the ‘conditions of continuing membership in the EFL’.

However, funds are expected to be raised significantly to help attack the summer transfer window, with goalkeeper Pierce Charles’ impending move back to Manchester City set to provide a massive boost to the coffers.

In terms of additions, the Yorkshire outfit have sealed an outstanding return for midfielder Barry Bannan, who joins on a one-year deal following his exit from Championship outfit Millwall.

Bannan had only left Wednesday during the last January transfer window, but after making just 16 appearances at The Den, the Owls icon is now back at Hillsborough, ready to work his magic again to get Wednesday back into the Championship at the first time of asking.

A move for Bannan could well be the signing of the summer in the third tier, with owner David Storch reacting to the club bringing the Scotsman back.

Posting from his X account, Sheffield Wednesday owner David Storch has reacted to the club being able to bring Barry Bannan to Hillsborough, hailing his arrival back to the club as ‘soooo good’ and that his team are hopeful they can ‘bring the excitement and fun’ back to the Yorkshire outfit.

Storch tweeted: At our first game at Hillsborough, Nov 5, ’25, @michaelestorch and I witnessed @bazzabannan25 nail a 35-yard bullet from left of center, Norwich goalie had zero chance to save. Bulls eye… @swfc 1- Norwich nil.

Getting @bazzabannan25 back feels soooo good! With the quality squad Simon Wilson and David Bruce are putting together and all the other cool stuff… @michaelestorch, Tom Costin, DB and I are committed to bring the excitement and fun back to @swfc. We are 69 days in… DB and team making progress everyday! I’m lovin’ it!

Look forward to seeing everyone Aug 20. #WAWAW.

It was a tough second half to last season for Barry Bannan, who never looked fully comfortable moving away from Hillsborough following an incredible 11-year stay.

But now he’s back in familiar surroundings and is set to play a major role in their promotion push back to the second tier, with Bannan possessing the quality and pedigree to be one of League One’s top midfield stars next season.

The Scotsman will be welcomed back to Yorkshire with open arms, and with such a jubilant reception following his return, it will help the former Aston Villa man massively to settle back in so quickly and deliver high-quality performances in the middle of the park that he’s renowned for.

A signing of this stature could well be the difference maker in helping Wednesday achieve their promotion ambitions, with all connected to Hillsborough looking forward to seeing him pull the strings when they kick off their third tier campaign at Leyton Orient on the 15th August.
