According to L'Équipe, Dayann Methalie’s transfer to Sunderland stalled during the medical, the club saying they detected a back problem with potentially significant consequences, a point disputed by Toulouse.

The deal had appeared complete. The clubs had settled on €28m, plus a further two to five million euros in bonuses.

With terms approved, Methalie travelled to England on Tuesday for the mandatory checks, the final step before signing.

It was then that complications arose, centred on Sunderland’s assessment of his back.

The disagreement has left the move bogged down, with no signature following the examination.
