Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano has agreed to extend his contract with the Bundesliga giants until 2030 (h/t Fabrizio Romano).
Bayern have been anxiously waiting to hear the Frenchman’s response for a long time after tabling a lucrative new deal. His current contract expires at the end of the season.
Upamecano’s demands for a hefty signing bonus and a release clause protracted the negotiations, while also putting the top European clubs on high alert.
However, Bayern have found a breakthrough at long last, with the French centre-back informing his decision to extend his stay with the German champions.
The 27-year-old will earn a lucrative salary of around €20 million per year under his new deal, which is double his current wages.
Bayern have also agreed to pay a signing bonus worth €20m and include a release clause in the region of €60 million, which could become active within the first two seasons of his new deal.
Upamecano’s expensive contract aligns with his terrific form for Bayern.
He has elevated his level to one of the best centre-backs in Europe under manager Vincent Kompany.
Upamecano has featured in 26 games in all competitions, playing a pivotal role in Bayern’s push to win all trophies.
The French international’s exceptional passing abilities, combined with his physicality and athleticism, make him a defensive powerhouse.
Bayern could recruit a top centre-back in the summer due to the uncertain futures of Kim Min-jae and Hiroki Ito.
The Bavarians have opted against making reinforcements in this winter transfer window but are expected to be busy come the summer.
They are scouring the market for a winger to provide cover for Luis Diaz and a central midfielder to replace Leon Goretzka, who will leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Bayern top the Bundesliga table with a six-point lead and have secured automatic qualification to the Champions League Round of 16.
They will face RB Leipzig in the DFB-Pokal quarter-final next week.
