Downs beat Stellies as Mabena shines

Mamelodi Sundowns secured a commanding 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch in a top-of-the-table Dstv Diski Challenge [DDC] clash at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium on Saturday.

Downs broke the deadlock through first team player Siyabonga Mabena in the 16th minute. The 18-year-old forward was set up by Thato Sibiya.

With his eye-catching display, Mabena was named man of the match as he was a constant threat to the Stellies defense throughout the match.

The 2016/17 reserve league winners doubled the lead 11 minutes into the second half, with substitute Chuene Moabelo scoring with his first touch.

Stellies pulled one back in the 62nd minute as Langelihle Phili's shot was parried into the path of Tauric Gamaldien, who made no mistake from close range.

It didn't take long for Sundowns to retain their two-goal cushion as Mabena dragged three defenders before setting up prolific striker Bennet Mokoena, who finished off a swift counterattack.

Masandawana remain in second place and have narrowed the gap to two points on log leaders Orlando Pirates, who have accumulated 25 points.

The Buccaneers will be in action against Kaizer Chiefs in a highly anticipated Soweto derby at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium on Sunday.
