Manchester United opened their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 defeat at newly promoted Hull City, with David De Gea offering a note of support afterwards.
Two first-half goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy in East Yorkshire decided United’s first match of the 2026-27 season. The player said in a post: “It’s not how it starts, it’s how it ends.”
United had been tipped for a top-four finish before the kick-off, but the season began with disappointment against opponents who finished sixth in the second tier last term.
De Gea, now Fiorentina’s goalkeeper, spent 12 years at Old Trafford and won the club’s player of the year award four times.
He is due to start his 2026-27 league campaign on Monday evening when Fiorentina visit Roma at the Stadio Olimpico, the final fixture of the first round of Serie A, with kick-off at 19.45 BST.
