Marten De Roon has landed in Rome and is ready to complete a transfer to Roma after nine seasons with Atalanta. According to Football Italia, the midfielder was seen at the airport in the capital and is expected to undergo medical and contract formalities before any official announcement.

The Dutchman has made more appearances for Atalanta than any other player in the club’s history, with 445 outings in all competitions. He joined La Dea from Middlesbrough in 2017.

He is now viewed as surplus to requirements in Bergamo under new head coach Maurizio Sarri. That stance has allowed Roma to move quickly for the 35-year-old, who was into the final year of his contract.

No specific price has been disclosed, though given his age, contract situation and his status in the squad this season, the fee is likely to be nominal.

The transfer would also reunite him at Roma with Gian Piero Gasperini, his long-term coach at Atalanta. Confirmation is expected once the medical and paperwork are concluded.
