Dean Windass names the 3 best EFL stadium atmospheres | OneFootball

Dean Windass has revealed that Bradford City, QPR, and Portsmouth had the best home atmospheres in his time as a player.

Former Hull City man, Dean Windass has named QPR, Portsmouth, and Bradford City as having the best atmosphere in the EFL.

Speaking in an interview with BetTom, Windass revealed QPR as one of the club's with the best atmosphere, and looked back on his professional debut up against some big names such as Les Ferdinand.

"Loftus Road – QPR. I made my professional debut there against Ray Wilkins, Les Ferdinand. It's another great, tight, little pitch – a sh*t result, I made my debut getting beat 4-1, but that’s where my career started.”

Windass made his EFL debut with Hull City, and went on to become a fan favourite with the Hull supporters in two separate spells with the club.

He left in favour of a move to Aberdeen in 1995, before returning to English football with Oxford United in 1998. Windass featured for the likes of Bradford City, Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, and Oldham Athletic later down the line in his career, which caught the eye for all the right reasons.

"Hostile environment"

Windass went on to issue high-praise for Portsmouth, and labelled Fratton Park as a 'hostile environment', and having 'great fanbase'.

The former Hull City attacking midfielder scored what proved to be his final ever Premier League goal for the Tigers against Portsmouth at Fratton Park, in what was an entertaining 2-2 draw.

"My next one is Portsmouth. When you go to Portsmouth it’s a hostile environment, they’ve got a great fanbase. The Pompey fans are so close to you on the pitch so you can hear everyone slagging you off. I scored in my last ever Premier League game at Pompey, so that’s my second one.”

"Unbelievable football club"

The former Bradford City man unsurprisingly highlighted Valley Parade as having the best atmosphere in the EFL, whilst also looking back on his time with the club.

“Obviously my first one is Bradford City, the Valley Parade. Unbelievable fans, unbelievable football club – they gave me a great living. Hopefully they can get back in the Championship, and if they do, they’ll have 20,000 – 25,000 fans in the stadium, which is what he had in the Premier League."

QPR, Portsmouth, and Bradford City might have some of the best atmospheres, but they've had contrasting starts to their respective league campaigns this season.

QPR find themselves within the top-six of the Championship table, and their fans will be dreaming of a return to the Premier League, which is long overdue, with the Rs not featuring in the top-flight since the 2014/15 campaign.

Portsmouth have made a sluggish start to the 2026/27 league campaign, with John Mousinho's side finding it tough to build a positive run of results in the early stages of the season.

Whereas Bradford find themselves playing League One football, although the Bantams seem to be heading in the right direction based on their last couple of seasons.

The Valley Parade atmosphere that Windass issued praise for is still evident to this day, even in the third-tier, with regular capacity crowds in attendance for Bradford matches.
