Jack Rudoni settled the game in the fourth minute of second half stoppage time with a low left-footed strike from outside the box, as Coventry City beat Stoke City 2-1.
Earlier, Rudoni knitted Coventry's play together, slipping Frank Onyeka into a central lane to draw a save and combining on the left to test Tommy Simkin again.
After the restart, he forced Simkin into another stop with a left-footed effort from the centre and kept finding pockets to release runners, maintaining pressure around the penalty area.
He finished with two attempts on target, four key passes and 18 successful final third passes, plus two recoveries high up, a profile that connected midfield to attack throughout.
Because he operated between Stoke's lines and received on the half-turn, Coventry continually progressed through him and controlled the decisive late territory.
Coventry City visit Bristol City next in the Championship. Stoke City travel to Swansea City.
