Matt Grimes converted a penalty in the 50th minute to tilt the game decisively, as Coventry City beat Preston North End 3-0. The midfielder's set-piece quality and distribution underpinned the result.
Early on, his outswinging corners repeatedly found targets, drawing close-range headers and establishing control in the middle third. His range passing from deep kept Coventry City on the front foot.
After the restart, he stayed composed from the spot (50.) after Ephron Mason-Clark was fouled, pushing the contest beyond Preston. One of his later crosses forced Daniel Iversen into a sharp save from a close-range header (64.).
Grimes finished with 115 passes, completing 104 of them, plus four key passes and six accurate crosses from 12. He also made 18 successful final third passes, the platform for Coventry City's sustained pressure.
With his delivery and tempo-setting from midfield, Preston's defence were pinned back and unable to disrupt Coventry City's rhythm.
Coventry City remain top of the Championship and host Southampton next. Preston visit Norwich City next.
