Alexandre Penetra won it in the sixth minute of second half stoppage time with a close-range header from a corner, giving AZ a 2-1 win at Excelsior.
Before the finale, the Portugal defender set a platform with three tackles won and four blocks, repeatedly shutting down Excelsior counters to keep AZ in reach.
After the restart he dictated build-up, completing 86 of 91 passes from 111 touches and finding teammates in advanced areas with 10 successful final third passes to tilt territory.
At the death he attacked Kasper Boogaard's whipped delivery, glancing a header into the top right to turn a late corner into the decisive moment.
The result lifts AZ from seventh to sixth in the Eredivisie. They visit Noah in the UEFA Conference League next, while Excelsior head to Fortuna Sittard.
