Ludovic Ajorque decided the game in the 71st minute, guiding a left-footed finish into the bottom right as Brest beat Le Havre 2-0 at Stade Francis-Le Blé.
Before the break, the towering forward created the clearest opening, slipping Kamory Doumbia into space through the centre in the 41st minute, only for the midfielder's effort to miss.
After the restart he found the same pocket, meeting Doumbia's pass and sweeping low beyond Mory Diaw (71.). The movement across the near side drew the centre backs and opened the lane for his first time finish.
Ajorque's display mixed penalty box economy with graft. He scored with his only attempt, and added eight instances of possession won plus three tackles, a rarity for a target man, to keep Le Havre pinned back in key duels.
Because Brest repeatedly connected into his feet and chest, his layoffs and runs kept the visitors' back line moving, allowing runners to attack second balls and ensuring the hosts controlled the decisive moments after half time.
Brest remain ninth on 36 points and visit Monaco next. Le Havre slip from 13th to 14th and host Lyon next.
