Jan Virgili was one of many Barcelona academy products who left the club in search of more opportunities elsewhere.

Although Barcelona weren’t too keen on offloading Virgili, the club’s hands were tied, and the youngster eventually joined Mallorca in a €3.5 million deal.

Since then, the young attacker has established himself quite well, notably registering an assist in three league matches.

The youngster has clearly shown he has the maturity to play at the highest level and is poised to make a big breakthrough in La Liga this season.

Barcelona’s masterstroke in Virgili deal

However, as revealed by Diario SPORT, Barcelona sporting director Deco had played a masterstroke in the deal to sell Virgili this summer.

Despite being forced to sell the youngster, the Barça sporting director was keen on extracting at least €4 million from Mallorca in the summer.

But knowing Mallorca were not in a position to pay such an amount, Deco sensed an opportunity to add a buyback clause in the deal.

Sure enough, Mallorca were only offering half the amount initially, which eventually rose to €3.5 million. In exchange, Barcelona were able to retain half the player’s transfer rights.

This could come in supremely handy in the future as it will essentially allow Barcelona to re-sign Virgili for only half the price.

Not to mention, the Catalans will also be entitled to half the amount of the youngster’s future transfer fee – a similar clause they had inserted in Oscar MIngueza’s deal, although the club may lose out on the opportunity to earn revenue since the defender has yet to renew his deal.

As for Virgili, all eyes will be on the young forward this season as he looks to make his big breakthrough in La Liga.
