Dennis Cirkin has confirmed he is to leave Sunderland this summer after an emotional message on social media. The player said in a post that representing the Black Cats was “one of the greatest privileges of my life”.

The 24-year-old joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021 when the club were in League One, and has made more than 100 appearances.

He helped secure promotion under Alex Neil, then established himself as one of Sunderland’s standout performers in the Championship.

This season he made 10 Premier League appearances, his final outing coming in the draw away at Wolves in early May. Injuries again curtailed his involvement, though he remains a hugely popular figure on Wearside.

In his farewell, Cirkin thanked the city and supporters, said Sunderland had given him his chance and reflected on the roar of the Stadium of Light. He said he would remember the heart of the community and the feeling of a whole city behind one team. His departure comes ahead of the club’s retained list being confirmed.
