Derbyshire Live reports that Derby County remain keen on reuniting with Ben Brereton Diaz, with Sheffield United also interested, and the Chilean is keen on the East Midlands move. That sets up a market, but Southampton still control the outcome.
He is under contract with Southampton until June 2028, described as two full years, so there is no countdown to a free and no need to entertain low offers.
Two suitors help the sellers. Derby have already seen a bid for West Brom's Alex Mowatt rejected this week, signalling a willingness to spend. Sheffield United know Brereton Diaz from a previous loan that included a permanent option they did not take, yet they are in the conversation again.
Southampton paid Villarreal £7m in July 2024. He then made 13 appearances without scoring and departed on loan spells. A productive stint at Derby last winter and spring, eight goals and three assists in 41 games, has stabilised his value, which sits around £6.8m.
Across 270 Championship matches he has 64 goals and 26 assists. Not prolific, not a passenger, and at 27 he has time on his side.
The pragmatic play looks clear, set a figure near £6.8m, push for a permanent sale rather than another loan, and recycle the funds into the squad. With that contract, Southampton hold the cards.
