The Rams are said to have a sell-on clause for the striker after he left the club for Manchester City in 2019

Derby County are reportedly set for another cash boost this summer, as Liam Delap looks set to complete a £20 million move from Manchester City to Ipswich Town.

That is according to the Derby Telegraph, following news that emerged on Tuesday that Man City are said to have accepted bids from both Town and Southampton for the former Hull City loanee, as claimed by The Athletic journalist David Ornstein, with the Suffolk side looking likely to win the race for his signature.

And that will play into the Rams’ hands in the coming days, having instated a sell-on clause when the front man moved from Pride Park to the Etihad Stadium back in 2019.

The additional finances will be County’s second-such windfall of the off-season, having also profited from Omari Kellyman’s £19 million move from Aston Villa to Chelsea last month.

Derby County set to benefit from Liam Delap, Ipswich Town deal

Although he never played a game for Derby, Delap was at the club for 10 years as he rose up through the academy with the club, before making the move to Manchester five years ago.

Since then, the England youth international has been biding his time with City; a side he has only featured six times for during his time at the club.

Instead, the forward has endured a series of loan deals, with the first being a five-month spell with Stoke City - the club most associated with his dad, Rory - between August 2022 and January 2023.

Having netted three times in 22 appearances for the Potters, Delap then moved on to Preston North End for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign, where he scored just once in 15 games.

Last season was the 21-year-old’s most prolific in the Football League, as he made another temporary switch to Hull City, and scored eight goals in 31 league appearances as the Tigers narrowly missed out on the play-offs in the second tier.

The report in the Derby Telegraph doesn’t state the percentage that County will be privy to once any deal does go ahead, but it is thought the money won’t be used straight away, as the club looks ahead to future transfer windows.

Derby County, Liam Delap windfall adds to Omari Kellyman funds

Once the Delap transfer goes ahead, it will be the second time this summer that Derby will benefit from two Premier League sides doing business this summer.

Omari Kellyman made the move from Aston Villa to Chelsea last month, with the 18-year-old moving for a reported £19 million fee between the two sides.

And as was reported at the time, the Rams had inserted a 15% sell-on clause into the teenager’s contract when he made the move to the Midlands back in 2022.

Kellyman made the move to Villa Park at the age of 16, as the Premier League side pounced during the Rams’ financial crisis, and got their hands on the striker for a reported £600,000 fee.

With both cash injections said to be lining the Rams’ pockets this summer rather than being immediately spent, it gives the club a healthy financial backing for the future, as they look to maintain their spot in the Championship this season.
