Derby County are preparing for their second season back in the Championship this summer.

John Eustace will be in charge of his first transfer window since taking charge of the club back in February.

The 45-year-old oversaw their survival in the second tier in the previous campaign, with the team finishing 19th in the table, one point clear of the bottom three.

The Rams will now be looking to bolster their squad in the transfer market in order to avoid another relegation battle in the upcoming term.

When asked what a nightmare scenario for the club might look like this summer, FLW’s Derby fan pundit Shaun Woodward suggested a failure to bolster their attacking options.

He believes up to three or four new forwards need to join Eustace’s side, or else they will be in trouble next season.

“A nightmare scenario for Derby now would be to not bring in any forwards or wide players,” Woodward told Football League World.

“We’ve been crying out for them for the last season-and-a-half.

“If we don’t get any across the line then we'd be in serious trouble.

“So that’s a real worry of mine because we have nothing up top, nothing to provide the strikers with.

“We’re lacking pace, power, so really worried if we don’t bring in three or four quality additions in the forward areas.”

Eustace replaced Paul Warne in February, with his side winning six of his 14 games in charge, which led to them earning a 19th place finish in the Championship table.

Derby will need improvements this summer

Jerry Yates was Derby’s top scorer last season, finding the back of the net 10 times in 42 games, which isn’t a huge tally for such a position.

Yates is not even at the club any longer, with his loan spell ending, leading to a return to Swansea City, so in simple terms he will need to be replaced, with John Percy reporting of an agreement with Luton Town for Carlton Morris.

So it’s clear that at least one new forward will be needed this summer, if not two or three, and someone with greater consistency in front of goal would be preferable.

But the team will need more than just that in this transfer market, with Eustace deserving the chance to be backed this summer in a bid to help Derby improve their position in the Championship for next season.
